DAY ONE - TUESDAY, JANUARY 9th - 4-8 PM

Join us daily after the Macworld Expo for a drink as we guide you on a smart culture journey.

PHOTO EXHIBIT by the legendary SF-based counter-culture photographer JIM MARSHALL and Q & A Podcast interview by Dusty Wright.(Exhibit continues through Thursday)

In the Beginning... there was Light.

And Jim Marshall saw the Light... and what he's done with it changed forever the face of modern photography.

Jim Marshall can loose a stream of highly specific invective in the same breath as a modest bon mot, thus nixing any serious link between Marshall and light with a capital 'L,' but his is the unerring eye, passion and skill in an incredible body of work that coaxes light to caress, kiss and reveal the essence of his subjects. From boyhood, when a camera was his more-than-just-a-toy companion, Marshall and his Leicas have chronicled the worlds of jazz and rock music, protest, pomp and presidents from East to West and beyond. He captured the future-famous in the days when a whole band had to share one motel room and the now-famous when the excess and ennui might seep from the seams of their perfected personae.
PODCAST INTERVIEW with Emily Morse from the hit podcasting show SEX WITH EMILY

Sex With Emily launched in August 2005 as a podcast and quickly became a top downloaded podcast in just a few months. Following the underground success of the podcast, CBS Radio's 106.9 FreeFM in San Francisco asked Emily to host a live show. Sex With Emily is now live on San Francisco's FreeFM. FreeFM is CBS Radio's next generation FM stations and available in 12 major markets.

Sex With Emily was featured in The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Wired News among other publications. Emily was also selected as "A Hot 20 under 40" San Franciscan by 7x7 Magazine.
PERFORMANCE by SF-based musician CHARLES XAVIER

Charles Xavier’s new CD, “The XMan Cometh, Expect the Unexpected” introduces The XMan, an emcee of sorts who boldly questions the status quo. Funky beats and screamin’ horns create strong musical statements that bring together the free-form artistry of jazz and mix in the passion of punk, funk, rock and street rap. Often intense, other times fun, his sonic landscapes take listeners on a creative, thought-provoking journey.

San Francisco-Bay Area artist Charles Xavier reaches for the innovative and the original, crossing boundaries to create a completely new sound. His release, “The XMan Cometh, Expect the Unexpected,” is currently playing on college radio stations across the country and is available online on iTunes, Amazon and other top music sites. In 1982, Xavier and Glenn Feit (Red Hot Chili Peppers, David Byrne) co-produced an EP, “The King Has Come,” with Xavier and the Messengers. The album received an “Editor’s Choice” review from Downbeat Magazine. In the mid-70s, Xavier led an avant-garde jazz band, Satori, appearing on television and receiving radio airplay. A professional jazz drummer at sixteen, Xavier studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York.

PERFORMANCE by SF-based Indie / Rock / Folk Rock quartet NINE POUND SHADOW

Long ago, as little kids, Breandain and Chris were taught to revere John Lennon and Elvis. (Lennon for his choice in bandmates, his charisma and heart-breaking humanity. Elvis for his dancing.) Their drunken and raving father would recite Bob Dylan lyrics to them late into the evening and sometimes into the early morning, asking them for their own interpretations of the artist's words. Unfortunately, the boys were too little to know what their pop meant or how to respond, but still the impression was made that the lyrics must be very meaningful.

Enter the 21st century....The cosmos and interstellar planets of fate had aligned . The moon was in it's seventh house and Jupiter was doing something with Mars (...basically some magical cosmic tomfoolery). The time had come to unite a la voltron-esque synthesis and form a band, a musical band, of average skill but exceptional heart. In a time of darkness, the weight of all we've done is ever-present; it haunts us. And still, there is a light inextricably bound to and balancing the darkness - the hope that it can all be turned around in a moment: Nine Pound Shadow
PERFORMANCE by Belfast-based sound artist PEDRO REBELO, Director of Research at SARC (Sonic Arts Research Centre)

Pedro is a composer/digital artist working in electroacoustic music, digital media, installation and improvised music. He has been involved in several collaborative projects with visual artists and has created a large body of work exploring the relationships between architecture and music in creating interactive performance and installation environments. This includes a series of commissioned pieces for soloists and live-electronics which take as a basis the interpretation of specific acoustic spaces. In the duo laut with saxophonist Franziska Schroeder he investigates technology-mediated performance practices. His electroacoustic music is featured in various CD sets (Sonic Circuits IV, Discontact III, Exploratory Music from Portugal, ARiADA) and he is currently releasing a double CD with electroacoustic and improvised music with the trio Faint on Creative Source Recordings.

Pedro will create live sound for DOUBLE VISION by manipulating a variety of electronic and acoustic sources. Pedro performs on custom designed software and hardware instruments and places particular importance on gesture and interaction.

DAY TWO - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10th - 4-8 PM

Devour some tasty video hors d'oeuvres prepared by film/video auteur DAVID LYNCH; trust us they're good for you!

David Lynch is famous for writing and directing what can only be called "David Lynch movies," features whose perplexing plots are often a surreal mix of wonder and repugnance. After his first film, Eraserhead (1976), became a cult hit on the midnight movie circuit, Lynch was tapped by Mel Brooks to direct The Elephant Man (1980, the story of Joseph Merrick). The film was a critical and box-office success and he was nominated for an Oscar. His next film was 1984's unsuccessful version of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel, Dune, but he bounced back with Blue Velvet (1986, starring Dennis Hopper) and firmly established himself as a unique filmmaker who could appeal to more than arthouse crowds. He has ventured into television, most famously for a Calvin Klein commercial and for the series Twin Peaks (1990). His other feature films include Wild at Heart (1990, starring Nicolas Cage), Lost Highway (1997) and The Straight Story (1999, starring Sissy Spacek). His 2001 film Mulholland Drive earned him another Oscar nomination for Best Director.
PERFORMANCE by SF-based singer/songwriter NYA JADE

Recently featured in a front-page article in USA Today and in the LA Times, Nya Jade has been cruising effortlessly through irresistible ballads, buoyant rock, and soulful pop symphonies. Her debut album “My Denial” stands as a potent introduction to a resourceful and gifted young artist. The San Francisco-based singer/songwriter has already drawn acclaim throughout the Bay Area for her unique music, a bold blend of sounds utterly unbound by genre, unified by Nya’s passionate, perceptive vocals. Songs such as the turbulent title track “My Denial” and the provocative first single, “One Pill” mark the emergence of a remarkable new talent, one whose fierce intelligence burns as brightly as her uncommon creativity.

“My Denial” will be the debut release on Katako Records – the label name comes from the initials of Nya’s family members. Nya will serve as both artist and CEO, an unusual but indisputably thrilling dual role. With her musical gifts more than matched by a daring desire to reshape the very face of the industry, Nya Jade is poised to spread her wings and bring her songs to the world in unprecedented fashion.
PERFORMANCE by legendary Tom Waits' horn man Ralph Carney's CARNEYBALL JOHNSON

People all over the country are asking "What is this CarneyBallJohnson, I keep hearing about?" Various reports claim it to be a new drug sweeping the nation, an unauthorized ride at the Ohio State Fair, or a WMD found in Iraq. All we know is that when Ralph Carney, Kimo Ball and Scott Johnson formed a trio, people didn't know if they should shoot it, hop-on for a ride, or celebrate. But then Allen Whitman started playing bass with them and everyone knew what it all meant. Come to the next show and see for yourself.

Ralph’s own recordings are soundscapes not unlike the David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, and Robert Frank movie soundtracks he’s contributed to—mixed with Dixieland, folk, swing and the experimental 70’s pop sounds of Brian Eno. Ralph Carney is perhaps the most hard to describe multi-genre, multi-talented, wacked out pop and jazz hornplayer/singer/composer since Rahsaan Roland Kirk…

DAY THREE - THURSDAY, JANUARY 11th - 4-8PM

PODCAST INTERVIEW with SF-based artist KAL SPELLETICH

Artistic Director of SEEMAN, Kal Spelletich exhibits all over, mostly (still) underground venues. He works with bio-morphic inputs to trigger machines that GIVE YOU A DIRECT EXPERIENCE. Kal teaches at SF State and lectures at other schools around the US. Currently he is living on the waterfront of San Francisco in an industrial district where he scours junk yards and dumpsters for industrial items whose technology can be reapplied.

SEEMEN is the collaborative effort of Kal Spelletich and some forty odd art drop outs and extreme technology inventors who enjoy building extreme machines and robots that they allow their audience to operate. There is NO OTHER ART LIKE THIS IN THE WORLD! This is an art that is a mix of robots, machines, sculpture, computers, science, inventions, audience interaction and storytelling. We are only interested in giving audiences a real life experience, not a passive virtual one. The actions of their robots poetically symbolize mans struggles and triumphs.
PERFORMANCE by SF-based quirky, progressive, jazz/rock band INNER EAR BRIGADE

Bay Area band - Inner Ear Brigade plays their own brand of quirky progressive jazz/rock. Inner Ear
Brigade is a collective band of musicians who seek to write tunes that transport you to the outer reaches of
the Universe. Their thru composed tunes take the listener on a groovy roller coaster ride of odd meters
and uncanny harmonies and melodies. Influences range from Zappa, Sunra, Magma, King Krimson, and Space
Ships.
PERFORMANCE by LA-based singer-songwriter MIRANDA LEE RICHARDS

Since the release of her debut album The Herethereafter, (Virgin, 2001) Miranda Lee Richards has been a busy woman. She has toured nationally and internationally to rave reviews, including a tour with label mate Nikka Costa that garnered strong press. A hit in Japan, Miranda's single, "The Long Goodbye," bounded into the top five and her video went into heavy rotation on MTV Japan. A PBS national broadcast of her live performance aired this spring. At the request of Yoko Ono, Miranda was invited to sing "Imagine" alongside Correy Brannan at the pre-Oscar Global Vision for Pease benefit this March. And that's only the beginning.

Now, with the wind still in her sails from the prevailing success of her debut album The Herethereafter, she has set forth on her sophomore effort. Armed with an impressive collection of new songs, and a group of musicians who help share her vision, Miranda returns to the place where she feels most at home. "I think I've come up with my own unique brand, it's a culmination of everything I love and want to be musically...The elements are finally in place; now all I need is for the stars to align. My hunch is, though, they already have."
